Notes
This case was quite an urgent one to work on as the electricity supply could have been cut off
any time and this would have been detrimental to her and her children. Apart from this, as
mentioned above, we had to liase with many different people and come up with an action plan
co-ordinated with various people and services in a short time. Through our contacts, previous
experience and very limited resources we managed to hold off the impending electricity suspension
and co-ordinate a feasible plan. This was done with numerous interventions with different agencies
mentioned above.
Poverty for a mother of 6
History
MaryAnne was married but no longer living with her partner, who was at the time in the
care of Mount Carmel Hospital. They lived separate lives to all intents and purposes. There were 6
children aged between 5 months and 15 years who all resided with MaryAnne in a Valletta flat while
her partner lived at another address.
MaryAnne and the children were living on Social Assistance totalling € 480 per month and a
further € 700 every 3 months in children's allowance. She received no assistance whatsoever from
her estranged partner and it was believes that a document was drawn up to this effect between them.
The problems we identified
- Poverty
- Debts
- Impending suspension of essential services i.e. electricity and water
- Welfare of children
- Budgeting
The actions that were taken
- Restructuring of finances and instruction in budgeting skills.
- Liasing with Caritas services in order to address 'usura' issues.
- Liasing and corresponding with service providers (Enemalta) in order to delay suspension
of services until budgeting was established.
- Provision of foodstuffs and clothing (from YMCA and SAS donations) for the most pressing
of material needs. Liased with Education Social Workers for information regarding obtaining
help for school material needs.
- Support sessions to address anxieties produced by these problems.
